"In the Mood" is a song popularized by the American bandleader Glenn Miller in 1939, and one of the best-known arrangements of the big band era. 사실 지금까지 제목도 모르고 들었던 곡이다. 음악이라고 하면 어디 선가 흘러나오는 멜로디를 따라 가는 것이 전부라고 여겼던 탓이다. 물론 그렇게 목적없음을 목적으로 해서 듣는 것이 진정한 감상의 자세이겠지만, 이젠 좀 하나하나 챙겨가면서 들어보기로 했다. 아마 너무 익숙했기 때문일텐데, 임진모씨의 글을 읽다가 제목을 알게 되었다. In the mood. 분명 영화 속에서도 들어본 기억이 있다. 그만큼 익숙하다. 색소폰으로 시작되는 도입부만 들어도 아차 싶을 정도로 익숙한 음악. 그런데 바로 밑에 포스팅했던 Sweet Home Chicago와는 분명 다른 분위기의 곡이다. 큰 홀에서 브라스밴드의 연주에 맞추어 춤을 추기 좋은 곡이다. 당시의 스윙 곡들이 영상 속에서처럼 대형 밴드들을 통해서 연주되고 있다는 사실도 캐치했다. 악기 구성만 보더라도 클래식 오케스트라의 전통을 이어받고 있는 분위기다. 흑인들의 서글픈 블루스와는 왠지 다른 경쾌함이 느껴지는 곡. 엘비스 프레슬리의 분위기가 연상되지만, 그에 비해 단정하고 격식을 차리고 있다는 생각이다. 엘비스 프레슬리는 이렇게 준비되고 있었는지도 모르겠다. (개인 적으로 블루스 음악을 좋아한다. 즐겨듣는다. 그 기원을 찾아가다 보니 자연스럽게 대중음악의 전통을 훑어 보게 된다. 재미있다.)
